WATER FOR ELEPHANTS

Boring!  Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon don't possess any chemistry.  This is a story about burning passion.  We never get a hint of that with these two.

I understand that the film is adapted from Sara Gruen's novel but sometimes you have to make major changes when translating to another medium.  They should've made the circus a spectacular show.  It should've been the best circus in the world.  Majestic.  Magical.  That backdrop would've better contrasted with Christoph Waltz' character.  Here within all this fame and glitter is a cruel and sadistic man.  He's produced the greatest show on earth yet he can't be satisfied.  He is the devil.

Plus, in making the show great (instead of the sad-sack, poor-man's version of Ringling Bros), the stunning visuals would help keep the film interesting.  Instead, the shabby settings call attention to the lack of plot.

Why would Francis Lawrence take this job?  He's a top-notch visual director.  Here, his skills go to waste.  Outside of the elephant, there isn't anything happening visually.

Christoph Waltz is amazing.  It doesn't matter what film he's in, when he shows up on screen, he stops the movie.  You can't help but watch him.  He truly knows how to capture the screen.

How Fox greenlit this is a mystery.  Who thought this would make money?  A tepid affair with a slow-moving plot.  They needed to make the relationships more stormy.  They needed to make Witherspoon more brassy.  They needed the show to be more spectacular.  Sometimes you have to toss the source material and adapt to the new medium's needs.
